The Oriental Matisse —
Revitalising Shanghai pin up models in the 1930s with the approach of Fauvism, Tang’s latest works mark a radical departure from the Chinoiserie – canvases filled with Chinese furniture and porcelain, a sumptuous array of colours and floral patterns, to bold and dramatic juxtaposition of brilliantly contrasting hues.
Generically, in a traditional category of Chinese painting, these ladies could be described as “female beauties”, and they were once celebrated for their feminine beauty and sexual allure. But there is a certain wistfulness to these portraits, a reflective quality, even a hint of melancholy, therefore infuses depth and nuance to these studies of Chinese womanhood.
