Feng Ye's Solo Exhibition - "Retracing Steps" 《回溯》

Title: "Retracing Steps" 《回溯》
Date & Time: February 26 till March 21, 2010 (11am - 6pm)
Venue: Y2ARTS Showroom (140 Hill Street, #01-02, MICA Building, Singapore 179369)
Curator: Stephanie Seet

Feng Ye’s second solo exhibition of 12 paintings consisting of 11 monochromes and 1 red piece at Y2ARTS (situated in MICA Building) showcases his audacious approach of representing a China historical moment through articulating movements of renowned Peking opera master, Mei Lanfang.

The structure of interpenetration and articulation in the flux of time, retracing steps from Mei Lanfang’s staged performances present the perception between past and present. Feng Ye re-examines the dimensions of time, transition of the generation, and relations between traditional Chinese calligraphy and the contemporary methods of painting –Feng Ye ingeniously translates the progression of cultural and political climate, current age of globalization in China and heightening charismatic of the Chinese classical into an exuberant figurative oil painting on large canvases solely with the palette knife.

Retracing Steps takes you on a journey of integrated culture experience of Chinese painting and the historical moment in Chinese classical of opera to Singapore.

Tang Xuezhen's solo exhibition - "Blossom"
Title: "Blossom"
Date & Time: 28th January 2010 to 10th February 2010 (11am - 6pm)
Venue: Y2ARTS Showroom (140 Hill Street, #01-02, MICA Building, Singapore 179369)

Reinventing the Shanghai poster-girl of the 1930s, Tang’s latest paintings mark a radical departure from her earlier, more decorative work, replacing sumptuous pattern-making with flat planes of colour, often in brilliantly contrasting hues, and a new psychological intensity in the portraiture.
Generically, these canvasses could be described as “female beauties”, a traditional category of Chinese painting celebrating feminine beauty and sexual allure. But there is also a certain wistfulness to these portraits, a reflective quality, even a hint of melancholy, which adds depth and nuance to these studies of Chinese womanhood.

Reflection & Refraction – Contemporary paintings by talented contemporary Chinese artist Cao Xihui celebrates his first solo exhibition in Singapore.  Featuring 11 paintings inspired by the scrutiny of human behaviours today, this exhibition captures the idea of artist own perspective on modern society.

Cao Xihui’s application of realistic water droplets is prominent and significant throughout his works. Each water droplets are pseudo magnifiers, engaging voyeuristic opportunity to peer into humans most vulnerable and innate form, this juxtaposition of human form or objects and fluid quality of water droplets also translates a sense of impermanence and diversity of individual human characteristics.
